Back when most of France’s land was farmed by the church, a group of Benedictine monks who, in 1098, formed the religious order known as the Cistercian order in Burgundy believed they could better understand the inner thoughts and workings of God by understanding the influence of different locations on a wine’s final expression. Cue the birth of terroir. While we might be working with a more sophisticated understanding of terroir, perhaps there is still some communion taking place: our flagship range is named after the Seven Flags atop our family crest, representing the seven gifts of God to man: Knowledge, Strength, Love of God, Godliness, Wisdom, Council and Understanding. High promise for a single bottle, but we think we can manage.

 

 

 

Burgundy has been growing grapes since the first century AD. But it’s not just their ancient status that has them pegged as one of the best wine regions in the world – it’s the fact that their Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are some of the most terroir-expressive in the world. No small feat with over 400 different soil types in 84 (despite the widely contested 100) appellations

 

Elgin is not Burgundy. Nor should it be. After all, the aim of a terroir-driven wine is not to mimic, but to express in a way that it is on par with the greats. Cooling ocean breezes, elevation and being surrounded by three mountain ranges help Elgin earn its status as the coolest wine region in South Africa, allowing Elgin to produce wines that are simultaneously elegant and vastly expressive – the perfect climate for both Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Paul Cluver is the oldest wine producer in the Elgin Valley, having spent the previous century farming apples and pears. But, like Burgundy, it’s not our pioneering status that sets us apart, but the expressive elegance of our wines that have caused us to become a benchmark of Elgin wine.

 

While Paul Cluver might not be in Burgundy, it still flies a Burgundian flag in the guise of Martin Prieur, one of the original heirs of top Burgundy producer, Domaine Jacques Prieur, who have vineyards in an unprecedented 9 of the 33 Grand Cru appellations. Joining the ranks of the flying winemakers, Martin Prieur not only works on the vineyards and production of Domaine Jacques Prieur, but also works with the largest Pinot Noir producer in the world: Chile’s Coño Sur. Bringing him on as a consultant for Paul Cluver was an obvious choice. Winemaker Andries Burger has flourished with the guidance of Martin, establishing himself as one of South Africa’s best winemakers of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

 

Seven family members, seven gifts from God… the Seven Flags Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are the ultimate expression of our wines, essentially showcasing we can produce world class Chardonnay and Pinot noir. Harvested from the oldest vines on the Paul Cluver property (which, in the case of the Chardonnay, are also the oldest vines in Elgin), these wines have swept the international stage, winning Platinum in last year’s Decanter World Wine Awards.

 

At the very least a communion with Elgin’s terroir, a tasting of the Seven Flags Pinot Noir and Chardonnay and their seven gifts should not be missed.
